Artist Biography

Gregg Carson is a contemporary, self-taught mixed media artist with a foundational background in graphic design. While he began painting in his thirties, his creative practice spans a lifetime, rooted in a childhood spent studying Sunday newspaper comics and a youth dedicated to music. Working professionally as a designer alongside a community of peers ultimately inspired him to transition his visual storytelling to the canvas.

In the mid-2000s, Carson established a presence in the Atlanta art scene, exhibiting in both solo and group exhibitions at contemporary spaces including the E. Weber Gallery and Lambert Gallery. Following a focused hiatus to dedicate time to his family, during which he accepted occasional private commissions, Carson made a prolific return to his studio in 2024. His current work features bold color fields, complex graphic layering, and symbolic portraiture that explores memory, identity, and inner perception. He lives and works near Atlanta, Georgia.

Artist Statement

I explore memories and experiences. They can shape our lives and influence how we see the world as we find our place in it. In my latest work, I begin with layers of symbols, sketches and spontaneous marks to represent things that exist within us, and choose to share or not, things that have made us who we are. Within this collection, masks serve as metaphors for the many faces we present to the world and how we use masks as a way to blend in or stand out, to protect ourselves or find courage.

This practice builds directly upon my earlier explorations of youth and nostalgia. Like memory itself, the physical layers of my art soften and dim over time, allowing a romanticized, essential representation of the past to emerge. Ultimately, this work reflects foundational lessons learned in my youth: that card games with strangers can grow into meaningful relationships, Coke actually is '’the Real Thing,‘ and playing outside can make you lifelong friends with nature.

Collector Testimonials

“As a Lifelong Waffle House aficionado, it’s obvious why this piece caught my eye – but it’s Gregg’s artistic style and the story behind the smaller details (’you’re gonna get shot!’) that compelled me to own it instead of just admiring it. Beyond the art itself, which is truly unique, the quality of the wooden construction and the protective coating he added ensures this piece will maintain its appearance and likely outlive me. My lucky daughter will inherit this original and uncompromising conversation starter!”
